Spring Cleaning Checklist: Room by Room
The fastest way to spring clean: work room by room, and in each room from top to bottom – dust and ceilings first, then furniture and surfaces, and the floor last. That way no dirt falls onto areas you've already cleaned. Use the checklist below to tick things off as you go. It covers the kitchen, bathroom, living areas, windows and bedroom, and can be done in one to two days. The best time for it is March, when the light returns and every speck of dust becomes visible.
How to Go About It
- Top to bottom: ceilings, lights, shelves, then floors.
- Back to front: so you don't clean yourself into a corner.
- Finish one room before starting the next – it keeps your motivation up.
- Declutter first: anything that can go, should go before you start cleaning.
Kitchen
The kitchen takes the most time, because grease and limescale build up there.
Tip: warm water with a splash of vinegar gently dissolves limescale on fittings – let it sit briefly, then wipe off.
- Empty the fridge, defrost it, and clean it inside and out
- Degrease the oven and baking tray
- Clean or replace the extractor hood filter
- Wipe out cabinets inside, check food supplies for expiry dates
- Descale grout and worktops
- Descale and polish the sink and tap
- Disinfect the bin
Bathroom
Moisture encourages limescale and mould – now's the moment to go through it thoroughly.
- Check grout and silicone seals for mould and clean them
- Descale the shower, tub and fittings
- Clean the shower curtain or shower screen
- Clean mirrors and glass surfaces streak-free
- Thoroughly clean and descale the toilet
- Check and clean the drains
- Wash towels and bath mats
Living Areas
This is where dust collects in spots you rarely touch.
- Dust or wash lamps, curtains and drapes
- Dust shelves, pictures and decorations
- Vacuum upholstered furniture and treat stains
- Vacuum behind and under furniture
- Clean radiators and skirting boards
- Dust electronics and screens
- Thoroughly vacuum and mop the floor
Windows
Clean windows make the biggest visual difference in spring.
Tip: clean windows on an overcast day. In direct sunlight, the water dries too fast and leaves streaks.
- Wipe down window frames and handles
- Clean windowsills inside and out
- Clean the glass streak-free with a squeegee
- Dust roller shutters and blinds
- Check window seals
Bedroom
A clean bedroom means better sleep – especially after the heating season.
- Vacuum the mattress, flip it and air it out
- Wash bedding, pillows and duvets
- Sort through the wardrobe and wipe it out
- Clean and store away winter clothing
- Dust nightstands and lamps
- Vacuum and mop the floor, including under the bed
