Rotkreuz is the largest settlement in the municipality of Risch-Rotkreuz – and its name has a charming backstory: it comes from the 'Gasthof beim rothen Kreuz' (inn at the red cross), first mentioned in 1808, which once stood at a crossroads. The place really took off when the train station opened on the Zug–Lucerne line in 1864.
